Our Program

Advance your career with the one-year Interactive Multimedia Ontario College Graduate Certificate program. Interactive multimedia plays a vital role in just about any industry in today's market. This pioneering one-year program is highly concentrated and allows the student to develop the professional skill sets needed in today's market. All courses follow a hands-on approach to learning and emphasize individual skills while giving importance to teamwork. Students in this program are taught the fundamentals of the latest version of the Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection, the industry standard software package. They also learn how to plan, manage, design, develop and prototype various multimedia projects from the ground up to completion. Topics include graphic layout, web design, interface architecture, client-side and server programming, project management, motion graphics, MYSQL and Flash development. Some of the languages taught include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and ActionScript. Students also experience a live client project during the second term which enhances their portfolio. Graduates of this program have found employment in such exciting, dynamic fields as multimedia development, web design, video editing, project management, flash programming, interface architecture, online education, server-side developer and much more.

This program prepares graduates to work as multimedia designers and producers for agencies, corporations and institutions that use interactive media. There is a wide range of public and private sector employers, including design houses, advertising agencies, newspapers and magazines, educational
institutions, the federal and provincial government, health care facilities, and the recreation and tourism industries. Employment opportunities may include animator, media director, video and/or audio technician, graphic layout designer, interactive designer, interface architect, web programmer, multimedia developer, project manager, multimedia editor, multimedia systems analyst, new media designer, developer, author or programmer, production assistant, production coordinator, technical project lead, video producer, web designer, Flash developer.

Courses

Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. Upon registration, each full-time student is provided an Algonquin email account which is used to communicate important information about program or course events.

MTM1500Studio Lab I
This course demonstrates the common threads that link throughout the program. These topics may include dSLR photography, file management and presentation practices. Guest speakers and field trips are carried out, when possible, to give students a real-life view into the multimedia industry. This course also doubles as an open work lab during the term.

MTM1511Web Design and Authoring
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of web design. Students learn how to use Dreamweaver, the industry standard software package used for layout and programming web pages and sites. They also learn xHTML, HTML and CSS to create, structure and organize web-based information, while practising industry-standard coding techniques.

MTM1519Web Development
This course provides an understanding of the current and next-generation mark-up languages for web development, including HTML, xHTML, CSS and JavaScript. Coding techniques allow students to create dynamic interactive web projects. This course also provides an understanding of the different mark-up, and scripting languages and how they can be combined effectively.

MTM1527Flash Authoring
This course introduces students to Adobe Flash, the standard for creating multimedia presentations and applications. Topics covered include Flash environment, animations for the web and an introduction to ActionScript 3.

MTM1532Interface Architecture
This course covers essential interactive components, including colour and typography, information hierachy and common look and feel, in order to create a user-based experience. The development of a professional level interface is key to any successful multimedia project.

MTM1533Graphic Technologies
This course teaches how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the current industry-standard graphic design and editing software, emphasizing the fundamentals of digital design and layout, along with the creation of graphics on the screen and web.

MTM1521Motion Graphic Effects
This course provides expertise in the use of professional motion and video editing applications which are capable of capturing and outputting video in a variety of formats. The main focus of this course is geared toward combining video, audio with motion graphics, in order to create media elements for the screen and web. File compression and CODECs are also covered in order to ensure proper file size and quality. Software in this course may includem Adobe After Effects, Audition and Premiere.

MTM1525Actionscript
This course provides the fundamentals of ActionScript3, the proprietory language of Adobe Flash, providing students with an understanding of the language, dynamic interaction and how to develop Rich Internet Application (RIA) based media to be used on the web.

MTM1526Rich Media Services
This course builds upon the web development languages. Various scripting techniques are covered to give students the opportunity to create dynamic and interactive content for the web. Technologies covered may include topics, such as JavaScript Libraries, jQuery AJAX, JSON, XML, PHP and ActionScript.

Prerequisites: MTM1500 and MTM1511 and MTM1519 and MTM1527 and MTM1533

MTM1529Studio Lab II
This course explores the technology in finite detail. Subjects could include portfolio development, specialized video skills, QVTR and advanced web technologies, as they relate to the curriculum. Time is also allocated for group and individual project work.

MTM1531Database and Server-Side Development
This course explores more advanced technologies, such as PHP, and MySQL and how they relate to dynamic web development. Students move from client-side HTML and CSS coding to server-side development by working with back-end Internet programming languages.

Prerequisites: MTM1500 and MTM1511 and MTM1519 and MTM1527 and MTM1533

MTM1534Client Projects
This course gives students a hands-on approach to a live-client project in which they learn the necessary steps in establising a working relationship with clients. Working in teams, students plan, manage and develop a real-time product, developing teamwork practices and ethics.

Tuition Fees: $2,971.38 per term.

Information Technology Fee: $62 per term. *

Incidental Fee: $50 in Level 01 and $200 in Level 02.

Student Activity/Sports Fee: $190.50 per term.

Student Centre Building Fee: $17.50 per term.

Health Service Fee: $10 per term.

Health Plan Fee: $114.50 paid once annually. **

A $35 graduation fee is payable in the final term.

A $25 transcript fee is payable in the first term a student attends Algonquin College.

International Students pay all relevant Canadian fees plus an International Premium of $3,600 per term.

** Students who have coverage with another plan can request a refund by supplying the Students' Association with documentation supporting the

Books and supplies cost approximately $1,900.

A suitably equipped Windows or MAC based computer at home would be an asset, as would Internet access. Students are required to buy an external storage device the first week of school for about $200.00.

  • A community college diploma or university degree in a media related field; OR
  • Mature applicants with related work experience must submit a detailed resume and portfolio demonstrating work generated on a computer. Contact the program coordinator for more details.
  • Experience with Windows, MacOS or Linux,and various software.
