March 21, 2012 – Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley launched a new initiative called ‘Co-op Works’ at an event with employers and other stakeholders from the area. The ‘Co-op Works’ initiative will benefit College co-op students and the employers who hire them in a program made possible through a financial commitment by the Eastern Ontario Devleopment Program (EODP). Co-operative education is one of the most strategic initiatives that employers can participate in when recruiting new employees. Renfrew County’s aging workforce, declining youth population, and more competitive job market can be addressed by hiring co-op students through Algonquin College.
College co-op students have a minimum of eight months of knowledge and training already completed. This gives them a solid foundation of skills that can support a company’s needs. By investing in a co-op student, a business or organization also creates an opportunity to evaluate a co-op student’s potential as a future employee.
At the Pembroke Campus, co-op placements take place during the summer months, an ideal time for employers to hire a student to relieve staffing issues that occur during the busy vacation period. We offer co-op programs in a number of areas including technology, skilled trades, tourism and business, and in specialty fields such as the nuclear and environmental sectors.
